The Night We Know (2) Driving

In truth, it is more dangerous to drive
At night – our eyes are limited by lights
Dotting the highways and the proxy eyes

We have installed in front of all our cars –
Our braking distance is thus shorter where
Daylight deludes us into seeing longer.

We must adjust the set we sit in front of,
So that the other cars and other people
Become a movement just of light and shadow –

Imagine a ballet on an outdoor stage,
Or music that we hear from a passing train,
Picasso fast at work on a masterpiece.

That very light and shadow is what we
Become inside the night we’ve always been.
